Aron Baynes to appear in court over Australian league incident

Aron Baynes was ejected from an Australian Basketball League (NBL) game after being elbowed while grabbing a rebound and arguing with the referee. The veteran center reportedly got into a physical altercation with the opposing head coach. Baines will face a court hearing and a possible six-week suspension, the maximum penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Baines was at the Brisbane Bullets’ game against the Cairns Taipans when the incident occurred. With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Baines clashed with Taipans player Ratt Mayne while fighting for a rebound. Mayne elbowed Baynes and the former NBA big man reacted angrily. He picked up a technical foul and was subsequently ejected from the game.

At halftime, Baynes got into a verbal altercation with referee Big Ben on his way to the locker room. Baines also got into a physical altercation with Big Ben head coach Adam Foote, according to ESPN.

The NBL announced a one-game ban and a $1,550 AUD fine for Mayne. Meanwhile, Baines was sent to an authoritarian tribunal.

Aron Baynes to appear in court over Australian league incident

A tribunal hearing is a special hearing to decide on a penalty for a player or organization. A full tribunal consists of at least four members, but can be reduced to one, as in the case of Aaron Baines.

The accused player, a representative of his team, match officials, others involved in the incident, and witnesses to the incident must be present at the hearing.

Similar to real-life court proceedings, evidence is presented at the hearing and both sides can present their side of the story to the hearing panel. If the person charged admits the charge, witnesses cannot be called, thus expediting the hearing process. If the person does not accept the charge, he can either admit to part of the charge but wish to give other evidence, or deny the charge altogether.

The court will question each person involved and then determine the appropriate penalty under the statute. The maximum penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct is a six-week suspension, but if there is evidence that Baines got into a physical altercation with head coach Adam Foote, he could be subject to additional punishment.
