The pawâtêtân, an inclusive basketball court near the Saskatoon riverfront, officially opened to the public this Thursday.
Located next to an open-air gymnasium near the riverfront, the outdoor venue features two full-size basketball courts, extra basketball rims and a full set of wheelchair basketball chairs for all to use.
The name of the arena, pawâtêtân, means “to gather together,” reflecting the fact that the arena is intended to be a place where everyone can come together to enjoy the game of basketball.
The arena is a partnership between the City of Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Downtown Business Council and the Saskatoon Wheelchair Basketball Association.
I am excited to see the opening of this inclusive basketball court that will provide everyone in Saskatoon with the opportunity to enjoy the sport and the community,” said Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark at the opening ceremony.
Jeff Lees, President of the Saskatoon Downtown Business Boosters said, “This venue is part of the Downtown Saskatoon Revitalization Project and will provide a new gathering place for visitors and local residents.”
Jason Smith, President of the Saskatoon Wheelchair Basketball Association said, “I am excited to see this venue provide a new place for wheelchair basketball players to practice and play. It will help promote wheelchair basketball in Saskatoon.”
