Kenya Simbas captain George Nyambua hopes for redemption against Uganda in Elgon Cup and Victoria Cup

Kenya Simbas captain George Nyambua believes there is room for improvement ahead of the team’s Elgon Cup and Victoria Cup matches against Uganda in Kampala on Sunday.

The national team struggled for a long time against Zambia and despite the 36-12 bonus point win on Wednesday, the Kabula captain blamed it on poor decision making.

“I am happy with the win but against Uganda, our offense has to be sharper and better. I don’t think we were patient enough and I am sure in the next three days we can address these issues before the game against Uganda. Nyambua said.

The 36-year-old said they have to improve on their game as the Zambian side failed to capitalize on their chances in the game with several penalties being awarded.

“Our ability to find fault was poor. We have to think about being on the right side of the referee but all in all, it was our first game in six months, there are positives and we will enjoy Saturday’s game against Uganda,” Nyambua said.

Nyambua admitted that there were some teething problems in terms of cohesion and overall play with 13 players making their debut.

“He’s got some new faces around him and it’s definitely going to be tough. I think we’ll be in good shape for Sunday,” he said.

The Simbas beat Zambia 6-0 with Ephraim Oduor, Joel Inzuga, Jone Kubu, Paul Mutsami, Teddy Akala and Nyambua scoring a goal each. Jone Kubu, Joel Inzuga, Paul Mutsami, Teddy Akala and Nyambua scored one goal each in the match.

Kubu made two substitutions and substitute Andrew Matoka made one. Kenya led 19-6 at the break and Kubu was named man of the match.

Zambia lost the first game 8-30 with Victor missing out as Simba and Uganda battled it out for the trophy. Simba used the tournament to prepare for next year’s Currie Cup.

Nyambua, who is captaining the team for the first time, is eager to make amends for his performance against Zambia. He is confident that Team Simba can make progress in the next three days to be ready for the challenge of Uganda.

The Elgon Cup and the Victoria Cup are the two rugby union tournaments between Kenya and Uganda. The Simba won the last edition of the tournament in 2021.
